GUNTER SCHNEIDER

The Man Behind The LOKSCHUPPEN Marburg.

“I want the LOKSCHUPPEN area to be a place full of visions, a place that inspires, where new ideas are created and pursued with passion. A place where a special spirit prevails. A place for encounters, enjoyable moments and community. Live. Enjoy culture. Work. Eat and sleep. A great place.“

THE HISTORY.

The workshop building, which developed into today’s NOXX hotel, was built in 1830 as part of the Marburg railway depot and was used to repair locomotive assemblies for Deutsche Bahn operations until it was shut down in 1989. In 2017, the historic monument was sold together with the LOKSCHUPPEN Marburg in a bidding process by the city of Marburg to Gunter Schneider and his team, who promised what the jury considered to be the best concept.

THE CONCEPT.
AND THE TEAM.

The Schneider team lovingly restored and transformed the time-honored buildings and put them to a new use in order to continue writing the history of the monuments.

The idea: to create a complete ensemble of event space, gastronomy, coworking and start-up hub in the LOKSCHUPPEN Marburg and to build a hotel on the foundation walls of the former workshop building.

THE VISION:

“The place where locomotives from far and near were once serviced and sent back into the distance via the turntable is to be transformed – for new purposes. A hub for the railway is to become a hub for people and encounters – with people at the centre.“ – Gunter Schneider.

As a key component of the ecosystem, the hotel, which opened two years after LOKSCHUPPEN Marburg, was intended to complement the concept as a starting point and retreat within the ensemble and, not least, to revitalize the entire area. And so the circle was complete: working, eating, enjoying, celebrating, relaxing and the concept encompassed all areas of life and found its completion.

REVITALIZATION WITH CHALLENGES.

How NOXX Hotel’s Architecture Blends Industrial Past With Cutting-Edge Modernism.

The brickwork on the first floor was extensively renovated in close cooperation with the city of Marburg’s monument protection authorities.

However, it was clear that these walls would never support a hotel. Instead, 16 massive concrete pillars, founded up to 20 meters deep, now support the five floors of the NOXX hotel.

The result is a multi-layered structure consisting of a historic base as a witness to the time, whose elaborately restored brickwork retains the charming character of the industrial monument, and above it a new structure with the formal language of modern architecture, set off by glazing as a separating element between old and new.

Architectural excitement was also created by a deliberate offset in the cubature of the hotel: two basic structures practically move out over the foundation walls of the workshop building, creating additional space and attractive outdoor terraces for guests.

The construction work on the historic workshop building took two years, not least because of the high requirements profile, which included comprehensive building automation and media technology, sophisticated room furnishings and, above all, the highest energy efficiency standards.

The result is a unique hotel with 82 rooms with an unmistakable character, four well-equipped conference rooms for business meetings and private celebrations and a rooftop bar with a fantastic panoramic view over the historic university city.

Unmistakable Look.

“The goal was always to create spaces with an identity, with a clear signature. We attached great importance to an appreciative combination of the history and tradition of the workshop building and our own timeless and modern style. The “rough” and industrial exterior was to be contrasted with something fresh and cozy in order to create feel-good spaces.” – Gunter Schneider.

With this in mind, a unique look was developed that picks up on the visual anecdotes of its former use and transfers them into the modern era. The majority of the furniture was specially designed for the NOXX, such as the special half-shell washbasin in the bathroom, which is reminiscent of the steam boilers of locomotives of the time, and many other pieces. Schneider’s aim is “to create an experience of living, discovery and inspiration”.

His love of detail is particularly evident in his own NOXX luminaire, which Gunter Schneider developed in collaboration with Studio Aberja. It is a sign of his love of optics and innovation, which he pursues with great passion and fascination within the SCHNEIDER Group. The luminaire combines traditional craftsmanship and honest materiality in a sophisticated way with a special beam characteristic that creates fascinating light reflections to inspire hotel guests.

COMFORT MEETS
SPECIAL SUSTAINABILITY.

A very important theme of the NOXX hotel is Conscious Living in the sense of a conscious, resource-conserving and sustainable lifestyle. With this in mind, the NOXX is one of very few hotels in Germany to be designed as a 55 EE efficiency house.

The NOXX hotel relies on a mix of different initiatives to actively save as much energy as possible. It operates completely without fossil fuels. Instead, it uses excellent insulation, sophisticated energy management and ventilation, highly efficient heat exchangers, photovoltaics and eco district heating. The rooms are electrified and air-conditioned at precisely the right time and immediately switched back to standby when a guest checks out. These are just some of the measures taken to optimize energy use.

The combination creates a unique hotel for Marburg that aims to welcome, empower and inspire guests – for comfort and well-being. Guests can rest assured that they have made a good decision in terms of sustainability and responsibility. A fantastic starting point for special experiences and discovering new horizons. A Feel. Good. Hotel.
