How NOXX Hotel’s Architecture Blends Industrial Past With Cutting-Edge Modernism.
The brickwork on the first floor was extensively renovated in close cooperation with the city of Marburg’s monument protection authorities.
However, it was clear that these walls would never support a hotel. Instead, 16 massive concrete pillars, founded up to 20 meters deep, now support the five floors of the NOXX hotel.
The result is a multi-layered structure consisting of a historic base as a witness to the time, whose elaborately restored brickwork retains the charming character of the industrial monument, and above it a new structure with the formal language of modern architecture, set off by glazing as a separating element between old and new.
Architectural excitement was also created by a deliberate offset in the cubature of the hotel: two basic structures practically move out over the foundation walls of the workshop building, creating additional space and attractive outdoor terraces for guests.
The construction work on the historic workshop building took two years, not least because of the high requirements profile, which included comprehensive building automation and media technology, sophisticated room furnishings and, above all, the highest energy efficiency standards.
The result is a unique hotel with 82 rooms with an unmistakable character, four well-equipped conference rooms for business meetings and private celebrations and a rooftop bar with a fantastic panoramic view over the historic university city.
